7 Extreme Activities for Adrenaline-Junkies in North Wales

North Wales has long-since been referred to as the Adventure Capital of Europe, and with the plethora of adventurous activities on offer, it’s not difficult to see why. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie in search of your next conquest or you’ve set yourself a challenge that you’d like to complete, there’s plenty of activities to choose from that can be arranged for your next holiday to North Wales. Here at Lyons, we’ve put together a list of seven of our favourite thrill-seeking activities that are suitable for all, making your next holiday one you’ll never forget!

Bear Grylls Survival Academy

Calling all wilderness warriors, there is an academy based on the Llyn Peninsula that will allow you to make like Bear Grylls and take part in a bootcamp full of survival training, team-building activities and outdoor fun. You can choose from half-day sessions to overnight adventures and you’ll learn key skills that would help you survive in a life or death situation in nature, including how to make a fire, build shelters and forage for foods. As you might expect, a certain level of fitness and determination is a prerequisite to taking part, and both adventures are advertised with the slogan “it may hurt a little…”. An experience like no other, that will allow you to fully immerse yourselves in the beautiful North Wales countryside, any family who are up for something slightly different should give this a go, although we can’t promise you won’t be eating worms at some point over your time with the survival experts…

ZipWorld Caverns

Take your zip-lining activities down under without the eye-watering plane ticket to Australia with a trip to ZipWorld Caverns. A maze of zips of varying lengths, heights and speeds await you in the old Llechwedd Slate Mines; the only way to explore the caves from a time gone by. Aside from flying through the air, you’ll also be crossing rope bridges, crawling through tunnels and traversing ledges in the ultimate Indiana Jones adventure you’ll remember for years to come. This activity is perfect for when the weather in North Wales is not so desirable, and a treat the whole family can enjoy.

Dry Slope Skiing and Toboganning

Are you a keen skier or boarder missing the mountains? Fear not, for not only will you get your fill of a snow-capped Snowdon, you’ll also have the opportunity whizz down the longest toboggan run in Britain, as well as ski, board or tube down the perma-snow slopes at Plas y Brenin or the Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre. This is the perfect family activity in preparation of a ski holiday, or to give young children an idea of what one consists of and is a lot less hassle than a trip to the Alps! You can either arrange lessons or book an open ski practice depending on ability, and nothing beats whizzing down hills with the gorgeous Welsh countryside as a backdrop.

Fforest Skyride and Plummet Pole

One of the biggest swings in all the land or the world’s highest power-fan tree parachute simulator – take your pick. The swing is a family activity that will see you hoisted 80 ft in the air in what is Europe’s highest 5-seater swing, and someone in the team will need to pull the release leaver before you fly through the air. The Fforest tower plummet pole is even higher at 100 ft and will provide unrivalled views over the forest and Conwy Valley, but your mind will be somewhat preoccupied by the scary leap of faith ahead. This adrenaline-fuelled activity is just £10 per activity per person, and you must be over 1.3m tall for both.

Zip World Velocity

Nothing beats the rush of soaring through the air above the glorious Welsh hills, wind in your hair, taking a ride on the fastest zip line in the world. This attraction is also the longest in Europe and is certain to get your pulse racing during your next holiday. You begin by taking on the Little Zipper – a warm-up for the big event. Red dumper trucks will then transport you to the top of the world for panoramic views out over Anglesey and beyond, and before you know it you’ll be flying over the beautiful scenery at speeds that can reach up to 100mph. Given the magnitude of this activity, there are several restrictions in place that families with younger children may wish to research prior to booking to avoid any disappointment on the day. After completing Velocity, you have earned bragging rights for envious family and friends left at home, so make the most of it and happy flying!

Extreme Climbing with Gaia Adventures

Anglesey in Wales is one of the only places that you can camp on a portaledge suspended above the sea – how many people do you know that have slept, quite literally, on the edge of a cliff? There are also abseiling and climbing afternoon adventures if you haven’t quite got the stomach to spend the night up high, but still want to experience the wild nature of the North Wales cliff-tops. For those that take their climbing a little more seriously, Gaia Adventures also offer a range of climbing courses ranging from furthering your skills to gaining a safety qualification, so check out their website for further details if that is of interest.

Coasteering with Anglesey Adventure

What could be more fun than leaping from a height into the wild and wavy sea below, and then exploring the various sea caves and coves all the while being swilled and swayed by the dominating waves? Not a lot! Families of all shapes and sizes will enjoy a day spent out on the cliffs, and it often ends up being a highlight of the holiday that will have both adults and children alike regaling their tales to family and friends at home. Anglesey Outdoors offer both full and half day adventures and is the perfect way to keep children entertained and suitably worn out during their time in North Wales.
