If there’s one thing Wales has mastered, it’s fish and chips, and a holiday to North Wales is the perfect opportunity to try the renowned curry sauce and chips combination if you haven’t already – it certainly gives the chips and gravy from their neighbours to the North a run for its money! However, whether you’ve been coming on holiday to this beautiful part of the country for years, or you’ve only just bought a caravan or holiday home to call your own, it can be difficult to find your favourite locals and this process usually involves a fair bit of trial and error. In an effort to minimise the ‘error’ aspect, we’ve created a list of five of our favourite fish and chip shops not far from our Wales holiday homes for sale, so you know exactly where to head for your Friday night takeaway once you arrive!
Jaap’s Catch, Colwyn Bay
Opening in 2012, Jaap’s Catch has already built an incredibly loyal following from both locals and tourists who dine in or take away from the chippy time and time again. The shop is located just a short walk from the promenade for an idyllic seaside picnic, or if the weather proves somewhat unsettled, as can occasionally be the case, then why not dine inside? There is a charming décor and friendly staff waiting to greet you and an enjoyable experience all round that’s sure to keep you coming back for more. Jaap’s Catch is rated 4.5 on TripAdvisor, with one of the review titles summing it up quite nicely with ‘There’s nothing fishy about Jaap’s!’. They even offer posh fish and chips complete with glass of prosecco, perfect for those on holiday to celebrate a special occasion – head down and try it for yourself.
Chish and Fips, Llandudno
If the funny name doesn’t tempt you enough, the sterling reputation of this quintessentially Welsh chippie should do the trick. The takeaway has five stars on Trip Advisor, and many of the reviews talk about large portions, value for money and friendly staff, which is a sign of things to come when you opt for Chish ’n’ Fips. The shop itself is ideally located just a few minutes stroll from the seafront, and a bench to gaze out towards the Irish Sea awaits you and your piping hot chippy – the ideal treat upon arrival when you just can’t face cooking for yourselves!
Les and Rita’s Fish Bar, Rhyl
Located in the heart of Rhyl, this fine fish and chip shop comes highly recommended by both locals and tourists alike and well worth the visit for a Friday night treat during your stay in one of our parks. They are rated a high 4.7 on TripAdvisor, with many customers highlighting the various offers they have on throughout the year making the food excellent value for money. The champion-chippy is family-run and has been providing the people of Rhyl with excellent fish and chips since 1968, and their current location on Wellington Road for the past 30 years. Pop on down for tea by the sea and see what all the fuss is about!
Frith and Chip Shop, Prestatyn
Frith and Chips is located just off Victoria Rd, close to a beautiful park with a lake that makes for the perfect backdrop for you to enjoy your chippy. The restaurant is rated 4.0 on TripAdvisor, with many reviews emphasising the fresh nature of the fish served here. The family-owned chippy is renowned for sourcing high-quality fish as locally as possible and charges a modest price for such a modern-day luxury. Some reviews talk about long queues during the summer, but that’s just a testament to word getting around about how good this fabulous chip shop is. Besides, you’re on holiday so chill out, play some word games in the queue, have a laugh with whoever you’re with and enjoy the delicious smell of what’s to come!
Chips Ahoy!, Colwyn Bay
Conveniently located just a short stroll from the promenade and beach, Chips Ahoy is a real gem for people staying in or around Colwyn Bay. They offer delivery, perfect for those who’d rather eat from the comfort of their own caravan and run a loyalty card scheme that is ideal for caravan or holiday home owners who frequent the area! Reviews talk about the impressive range of gluten-free options, and how they are priced the same as normal food – a rarity as we’re sure those who are gluten-free can attest! The staff will go above and beyond for your requests and are very friendly, and the menu is accommodating for very small children. For anyone staying at one of our holiday parks nearby, this chippy is a must-visit!
We hope these five fish and chip shops have narrowed down your search for the perfect takeaway and that they give you a fantastic taste of not only fresh fish and high-quality chips but what to expect for the rest of your holiday.
