North Wales’s best attraction named

An attraction close to our holiday parks in North Wales has just scooped up the title for the ‘best attraction in North Wales’… do you know what it is? It comes as no surprise to us, The Welsh Mountain Zoo was named the best attraction in North Wales at the first ever ‘Go North Wales Tourism Awards’ which took place at the Venue Cymru in Llandudno at the beginning of the month. The zoo first opened its doors, (or should we say gates?) More than 50 years ago in 1963 in Upper Colwyn Bay and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The zoo fought off stiff competition from a whole host of activities and attractions at the first time event which saw hundreds of businesses, organisations and individuals gather to celebrate the greatest achievements of the North Wales tourism industry. The awards were launched this year to celebrate and recognise excellence in the region’s hospitality and tourism sectors, showcasing and celebrating the achievements. The panel obviously took note of The Welsh Mountain Zoo’s impressive figures, which has seen the number of annual visitor’s increase by 160,000 and in back in August the zoo welcomed its eighth million visitor since it opened its doors! Impressive stuff! In 2008 it was recognised as the National Zoo of Wales and in conjunction with the National Zoological Society of Wales, has put in incredible behind the scenes work to contribute to the conservation of endangered animals and conservation work of zoos both nationally and worldwide. The Zoo’s marketing officer, Jamie Toffrey said this of the win: “I definitely think we deserved to win. We are the National Zoo of Wales, we attract a lot of people to the area each year and we’ve been established for 52 years. It’s a fantastic accolade to have and I certainly hope we continue to attract visitor’s year on year.” The Zoo’s director of operations and administration, Jennifer Jesse added: “We really weren’t expecting to be named winners and particularly in this category which was undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated. It’s great to see the Zoo recognised by Go Tourism Wales, particularly as part of their first awards ceremony. “The Zoo is a much-loved attraction and we work hard to ensure it remains a fantastic and enjoyable day out. This award is testament to our fantastic staff, volunteers and visitors who have made the Zoo what it is today.”   Other articles you may also want to read:North Wales: A thrill seekers adventure hot spotNorth Wales gardens you must visit this winter
