Japanese chef visits North Wales for the Welsh rarebit

Japanese cooks are being shown how to make the perfect Welsh rarebit, courtesy of a culinary school in North Wales. Welsh rarebit as seen near our holiday park in Conwy  Cookery author and chef Tamao Sako was given a lesson in how to make the dish – which is rapidly growing in popularity in Japan – by Andrew Sheridan at the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre, which is just a short distance from our holiday park in Conwy. Tamao runs the British Pudding baking school in Japan has remarked on how popular the dish is becoming in her home country, and she will be returning to the food centre later this summer with a group of ambitious Japanese cooks who are coming to learn how to bake British classics, as well as making rarebit for themselves. Her visit was part of a tour organised by North Wales Tourism in association with Hankyu Department Store, which will see culinary attractions at the forefront. The Department Store are running a British Produce Fair, and are researching Welsh products to be featured at the event.Speaking of the visit, Tamao said, “We have had a very interesting tour around North Wales – I didn’t realise there was so much to see and do here.” Keiji Hayashi, who is based in the UK and conducting the research for Hankyu said, “When people in Japan think of Britain they know England and Scotland, but very few are aware of Wales as a separate country. We want to highlight the produce of Wales – the food and the crafts and also a place to visit as a tourist.” With so much to see and do (and eat!) we’re not surprised that North Wales is being focused on as an area for Japanese visitors to come and explore.
